Ukraine’s Zaporizhia area rocked by explosion, Europe’s largest nuclear plant in danger

Kyiv. Powerful explosions rocked Ukraine’s Zaporozhye region on Sunday morning. Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is located in this area. The Global Nuclear Monitoring Organization said in a statement that there were tremendous explosions in Joporijia in the morning. The organization called for “urgent measures to help prevent a nuclear accident” at the Russian-occupied plant.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said there were two explosions, one on Saturday evening and the other on Sunday morning near the Zaporizhzhya plant. Fears of a nuclear holocaust have run high since Russian troops seized the plant in the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24. The statement said that IAEA experts at the Zaporizhia Center reported more than 12 explosions on Sunday morning.

The IAEA statement said several buildings, systems and equipment at the power plant were damaged in the shelling. It has been said that although there is no information about any casualty in it. Grossi said the reports of the shelling were “extremely disturbing”. “Whoever is behind this should stop these attacks immediately,” he said.
