Said- Wrong about the use of Dirty Bomb
Russia is deviating from its strategy
Kyiv. Ukraine’s Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday rejected Russia’s claim that Kyiv was trying to provoke it with a radioactive device—the so-called dirty bomb. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu called his British, French, Turkish and American counterparts over the weekend to claim that Ukraine was trying to provoke it with a radioactive device—the so-called dirty bomb. Britain, France and the US dismissed it as ‘completely false’. Ukraine also rejected Moscow’s claim, saying it was an attempt to divert attention from Russia’s own plan to use the dirty bomb.
Kyiv’s nuclear agency Energoatom said the Russian military carried out secret construction work last week at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine. It said in a statement on Tuesday that Russian officials occupying the region would not allow Ukrainian workers operating Europe’s largest nuclear plant or the UN’s nuclear watchdog to see what they were doing. “It appears that Russia is preparing for a terrorist act by using nuclear material and radioactive waste stored in (the plant),” Energoatom said.
Dirty bombs will spread radiation pollution over a large area
It said the plant’s used dry fuel storage facility has 174 containers, each containing 24 assemblies of used nuclear fuel. “The destruction of these containers as a result of the explosion would result in a radiation accident and spread radioactive pollution over an area of several hundred square kilometres,” the company said. Energoatom asked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to find out what was going on there. Dirty bombs do not cause catastrophic destruction like an atomic bomb, but it spreads radiation pollution over a large area.
