Johannesburg. A 24-year-old Indian businessman was allegedly shot dead by a police constable in Uganda’s Kisoro town. The deceased has been identified as Kuntz Patel. According to the news of the Daily Monitor newspaper, police constable Ilioda Gumizamu (21) of the Field Force Unit (FFU) has been booked for murder. On October 27, when he was trying to escape from the crime scene, he was caught and handed over to the police.
The newspaper quoted regional police spokesman Eli Matt as saying that the accused policeman, along with other men, went to the shop of an Indian merchant and shot him in the chest. The policeman was arrested. He was stopped at Kisoro police station for questioning. “The victim was admitted to St. Francis Hospital in Mutalere in Kisoro district in a critical condition,” Matt said. According to the police, Patel died a few hours later.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi that Indian High Commissioner to Kenya Namgya Khampa met Kenyan President William Samoi Ruto and requested him to expedite the investigation into the matter. District Commissioner Shafiq Sekandi, a resident of Kisoro, told the Daily Monitor that Gumijamu was in the police force for four years.
Patel, a native of Thasra in Kheda district, had moved to Uganda four years ago with his wife to work in his cousin’s hardware shop. According to local media reports, Gumijamu told the police that he killed Patel over a case of “misidentification”.
