Tension escalates in Korean peninsula! North and South Korea fired rockets at each other

New Delhi. Tensions between North Korea and South Korea are increasing continuously. On Monday, North and South Korea fired warning shots at each other near the disputed western maritime border. North Korea fired ten rockets off its west coast early Monday. North Korea’s official KCNA said South Korea’s military fired warning shots at a North Korean boat that crossed the two-Korean border at 3.50 a.m.

According to a report in The Sun, a spokesman for the General Staff of the People’s Army of North Korea said that in response, North Korea fired ten rockets from multiple rocket launchers at around 5:15 a.m. The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had repatriated a North Korean merchant ship that crossed the Northern Boundary Line (NLL), the de facto maritime boundary between the two Koreas.

Significantly, this incident has happened in the midst of rising tensions over the recent missile tests by North Korea. The marked maritime boundary on the western coast of the Korean peninsula is a source of long-running hostility between Koreas. In recent weeks, North Korea has tested ballistic missiles in retaliation for military exercises between South Korea and the US. At the same time, since September 25, North Korea has fired 15 missiles and hundreds of artillery towards the sea.

South Korea’s military said Kim also fired a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast from the Sunan area near Pyongyang. Earlier, Kim Jong-un had flown 12 warplanes close to the border, believed to have conducted air-to-surface firing exercises, according to the South Korean military.
