Washington, Something different has been seen this time in the United Nations General Assembly, because in a rare event India has voted against this demand of Russia. India voted against Russia’s demand for a secret ballot in the UN General Assembly on a draft condemning Russia’s “illegal” occupation of four regions of Ukraine. In the General Assembly voting on Russia’s proposal, 107 countries, including India, voted in favor of not holding a secret ballot, which has curbed all possibilities of secret ballot. According to a report by news agency Reuters, voting on the proposal is likely to be held on Wednesday or Thursday.

Only 13 countries cast their vote on Monday in favor of the secret ballot, while 39 countries refused to vote in any favor, obstinately. Russia and China did not take part in the vote. For the secret ballot, Russia argued that due to Western lobbying, many countries are unable to explain their position publicly. During the meeting on Monday, Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzia also questioned the pressure to condemn Moscow. Nebenzia asked what does this resolution have to do with peace and security or how is this resolution trying to settle conflicts? Nebenzia called it another step in the direction of division and escalation of conflict.

Let us tell you that Moscow has already made part of Russia, which has been declared illegal and coercive by Western countries including Ukraine, in the four partly occupied territories in Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya. The resolution coming up for vote in the UN calls on states not to recognize Russia’s move and appeals to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
