Somalia: Terrorist attack on Mogadishu hotel, many government officials trapped inside

Mogadishu. Some gunmen have attacked a hotel in the capital of Somalia. Al Shabaab, an extremist terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for the attack on the hotel. There have also been reports of casualties in the attack. The security forces have laid siege to the hotel which is still going on. Gunmen believed to be members of an insurgent group wearing suicide vests stormed a hotel popular with government officials in Somalia’s capital on Sunday, police said.

According to a New York Times news, no immediate information could be found about the people killed in this attack. But the security forces have rescued dozens of citizens and officials, including the fisheries minister, from the Villa Rose Hotel. Those who were trapped inside the hotel at the time of the attack. The terrorist group Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group also said its fighters were attacking Somalia’s presidential palace, which is near the hotel.

The number of attackers who attacked the hotel was not immediately clear. The extremist terrorist group has often targeted hotels where government officials gather or are frequently present. It was told that the siege of Villa Rose Hotel was continuing till late Sunday night. As the terrorist attack began on the hotel, two massive explosions and heavy gunfire were heard. Police told reporters that some government officials were rescued after fleeing through windows. Among those rescued were the country’s Fisheries Minister Abdilahi Bidhan Warsame and Senator Duniya Mohammed. Local media reports said Interior Security Minister Mohamed Dudishye was wounded in the attack. However, its veracity could not be confirmed.
