Somalia: Bomb blast and shooting at hotel in Kismayo city, 9 killed, all attackers killed

Officials had said that the gunmen were inside the Tawakal hotel and security forces were present at the spot. The Islamic extremist group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police officer Abshir Umar told The Associated Press over the phone that the attack began when a car driven by a suicide bomber hit the hotel entrance and then exploded.

Many small shops on the side of the road were destroyed due to this explosion. According to the police officer, some government officials and senior citizens were having lunch at the hotel at the time of the blast. There is no clear information so far about the number of casualties in the attack. Mohamed Nasi Guled, a senior Jubaland state police officer, said three attackers entered the hotel premises.

He said the security forces would eliminate the attackers soon. The hotel is popular as a venue for meetings of government officials.
