Seoul. One of South Korea’s deadliest accidents happened late Saturday in Seoul’s popular Itaewon district. More than 150 people have been killed and many others injured in a stampede at a crowded Halloween event. The incident happened when thousands of people gathered in a narrow street in Itawan near the Hamilton Hotel. Reports said that the street where the stampede took place was only four meters wide. The street was not even wide enough that even a sedan car could pass through it properly.

According to a news agency AFP news, more than 100,000 people had gathered in the street and a large crowd was walking out of the hotel and Etawah metro station. As the crowd increased, there was a stampede. Most of the people attending the event to celebrate Halloween were teenagers and in their 20s. Jean Ga-Eul, 30, who was present at the scene, said that ‘a lot of people were just being pushed around and I was stuck in the crowd and I couldn’t even get out.’ He said people were seen scrambling to get out of the suffocating crowd after getting stuck in a narrow sloping lane. Many people climbed on top of other people. Due to which there was a mound of people, who were loaded on top of each other.

South Korea: Death toll rises to 120, over 100 injured in Halloween party stampede

Fire Officer Choi Seong-beom told reporters at the scene that the death toll could rise. This was the first Halloween event after the Kovid restrictions were lifted. Due to which the crowd was huge. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol declared national mourning on Sunday, saying the government would pay for the treatment of the wounded and the funerals of those who died.
