moscow, Russia has launched its own navigation system to compete with America’s Global Positioning System (GPS). Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted the Defense Ministry as saying that the Roscosmos space agency on Monday launched its Soyuz-2.1B rocket carrying the GLONASS-K navigation system from the northern cosmodrome. “The spacecraft has successfully launched the Soyuz-2.1B medium-class launch vehicle with the navigation GLONASS-K system,” the agency said, citing the ministry.

The GLONASS-K navigation system was launched into space with a Soyuz rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, about 800 km (500 mi) north of Moscow. ‘GLONASS-K’ is a navigation satellite as part of the Russian GLONASS radio-based satellite navigation system. Russia has spent billions of dollars over the past two decades on developing the GLONASS system, which is seen as a potential rival to the US Global Positioning System (GPS).
