Reformist opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister
Small parties supported
Kuala LumpurMalaysia’s Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah on Thursday announced reformist opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as the country’s new prime minister. This ended several days of political uncertainty following the general elections in Malaysia with a fractured mandate. Anwar Ibrahim has now become the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. According to Sultan, Anwar will be administered the oath of Prime Minister today i.e. on Thursday itself.
The Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) alliance led by Anwar won the maximum number of 82 seats in the general election. However, this coalition fell far short of the required 112 seats to form the government. But after getting support from smaller parties, the Sultan of Malaysia announced to make him the Prime Minister.
Small parties supported
The Malay-centric Perikatan Nasional (National Alliance) of former Prime Minister Muhyiddin won 73 seats in the election. The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party emerged as the largest party in this alliance, winning 49 seats. The way for Anwar to become Prime Minister was cleared when various small parties agreed to support him to form a unity government. With Anwar becoming prime minister, Muhyiddin’s regime is expected to address concerns about the growing Islamization of Malaysia and initiate reforms in the governance system.
