Tokyo, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has now ordered an investigation into the Unification Church, which has been in news since the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The Minister of Culture, under the Kyodo News Agency and other local media, has been directed to investigate the Unification Church through the Religious Corporations Act. Let us tell you that after the murder of Shinzo Abe, there was anger among the people about his role with the church, to remove it the PM has ordered an inquiry.

Abe, a well-known leader of the country, was also shot for his close relationship with this church. However, the attacker first wanted to shoot the head of the church. Tetsuya Yamagami, the accused who shot Shinzo, told investigators during interrogation that he first wanted to shoot the leader of the Unification Church instead of the former PM, but could not do so due to Corona. According to Yamagami, his family had become poor because of the Unification Church.

What is Unification Church
This church is a South-Korean religious organization that has been operating in Japan for 41 years. This church is officially known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Reunification and is referred to in derogatory language as ‘The Moonies’. Haq Jae Han Moon, who has been leading the church since 2012 after the death of founder Myung Moon, and her husband had stopped visiting Japan. Seeing no chance of killing Haq Jae Han Moon, the attacker said he was determined to target 67-year-old Shinzo Abe, who was most sympathetic to the Unification Church.

Experts say the church’s right-wing beliefs helped it expand overseas during the Cold War. Nobusuke Kishi, the grandfather of Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister of Japan from 1957 to 1960, was a good friend of church founder Myung Moon, who helped spread the organization in Japan. According to Japanese media, it was Kishi who helped establish the church’s political wing, the International Federation for Victory over Communism in Japan, in 1968. After spreading its foot in the country, the church started making people financially poor. The church siphoned off millions of dollars by trapping people. This conservative religious organization is often known for its anti-communist and mass weddings.

The attacker was also looted by the church
In the case of Abe’s killer, Yamagami, relatives say that his mother, a devout follower of the church, was also impoverished by the church. According to media reports, the church took a donation of about 100 million yen ($692,000) from the murderer’s mother, a large part of which came from life insurance money received after her father’s suicide. Dan bankrupted the family and due to which the accused also missed college.
