Pointing directly to Pakistan, Jaishankar said, ‘We have a lot of Soviet and Russian made weapons. There are many reasons for this. You also know the pros and cons of weapon systems… and also because for many decades western countries did not supply arms to India, but made a military dictator their preferred partner before us. Jaishankar was asked by an Australian correspondent whether India would reduce its reliance on Russian weapons systems and reconsider its ties with Russia in the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict.
Pakistan was under military rule for half of the last 73 years
It has been more than 73 years since Pakistan came into existence and in these years more than half of the time it has been under military rule. Jaishankar arrived in Australia after completing his New Zealand visit, where he held the 13th Foreign Ministers Framework Dialogue (FMFD) with Wong. Last month, Jaishankar had said during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that when arms are offered to India, it looks at options keeping its national interests in mind.
