Catania (Italy). Italy’s new far-right government is issuing instructions to target foreign ships rescuing migrants. After this, the captain of a rescue ship on Sunday refused to obey orders to leave the Sicilian coast after 35 migrants on his ship were not allowed to disembark. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s two-week-old government is refusing to give safe harbor to four ships in the central Mediterranean.
These ships are carrying migrants rescued from distress at sea at least 16 days ago. Italy is allowing only those people who are not in good condition to get off the ship. On Sunday, Italy ordered the ship to leave the port after allowing 144 rescued migrants on ‘Humanity 1’ to land in the country. Children and more than 100 minors and sick people were among those evacuated. But the captain of the ship refused to obey this order. SOS Humanity, of the German charity that operates the ship, said that ‘until all the people are disembarked, the order will not be followed. The ship is standing at the port with 35 migrants.

After this, another charity ship reached Catania on Sunday and the same procedure was adopted for this also. There were 572 migrants on board the Geo Barents ship operated by Doctors Without Borders. The selection process was completed by late evening in which 357 people were allowed to disembark from the ship. While the remaining 215 people were stopped on the ship itself. Human rights groups said on Sunday that Italy had broken international law by refusing to land in its port migrants rescued from distress at sea. A German defense body has said it will take legal action against Rome.
