Italian government imposes emergency after landslide on island, still searching for missing people

At least one person has died and a dozen people have gone missing due to this landslide. On Saturday, several buildings collapsed due to landslides caused by heavy rains on Italy’s southern Ischia island. Giving information, local media and emergency services said that the landslide affected the small town of Casamiciola Terme on the island of Ischia, engulfing at least one house and several vehicles were swept into the sea.

Civil Protection Minister Nelo Musumesi said at the end of the emergency cabinet meeting that the first tranche of the two million euro relief fund had been released. More than 200 rescuers are still searching for more than a dozen missing, while hundreds of volunteers and others are working to clear mud from the streets after rains and landslides. Cars and buses got stuck after the landslide. Apart from this, boulders fallen from the mountains are scattered on the roads.

According to the Italian news agency AGI, rescue workers recovered the body of a 31-year-old woman. Ischia, not far from Naples, faces emergencies every now and then after earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or severe weather. Let us inform that in the year 2017 also there was an earthquake in this area, in which two people died. At the same time, it was completely destroyed by a more powerful earthquake at the end of the 19th century.
