According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and its epicenter was 65 km south-southeast of Gorontalo at a depth of 147 km in the ocean. Tremors were felt in Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, North Maluku and Central Sulawesi provinces.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has not issued any tsunami warning. Due to Indonesia’s position on the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific Ocean, the risk of earthquakes is high here.

At least 331 people were killed and about 600 were injured in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that hit Cianjur city in West Java on November 21. Earlier, about 4,340 people were killed in the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi. At the same time, in 2004, a tsunami caused by an extremely powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean killed more than 2,30,000 people in a dozen countries, most of whom were from Aceh province of Indonesia.
