Kinshasa. At least 50 people have died due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. City police chief Silvano Kasongo gave this information on Tuesday. Apart from this, he said that although the number of dead may increase now. Due to flood, the whole area was filled with mud and water. The N1 highway, which links Kinshasa to the main sea port of Matadi, was also affected by the floods.

The prime minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, said authorities were still searching for more bodies. Lukonde said on state television on Tuesday that we are assessing the damage. But at this time the biggest loss has been to the lives of the people. According to three local officials, some 12 million people live in the 24 areas of Kinshasa that were affected by the floods. Due to the floods, houses were submerged, roads were broken and, a large number of people died.

Officials said most of the devastation took place in houses built on plots without official permission. The prime minister and the provincial governor visited the flood-affected areas. Let us inform that in the year 2019, at least 39 people had died due to floods caused by torrential rains in Kinshasa. During that time, heavy rains flooded the low-lying areas and some buildings and roads collapsed.
