Queue. World Cup organizer FIFA has rejected a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to share a message of world peace ahead of Sunday’s tournament final in Qatar. CNN gave this information in one of its reports on Saturday. According to the report, Zelensky wanted to give a video message to the fans at the stadium in Qatar before the final match, but he was quite surprised by FIFA’s response. However, CNN reported that talks between Ukraine and the sport’s governing body are still ongoing.
The President of Ukraine has repeatedly appealed for peace and aid on the world stage at government and cultural events, including Israel’s parliament, US lawmakers, the Grammy Awards, the Cannes Film Festival and the G20 summit. Zelensky has also conducted interviews and conversations with various journalists and well-known entertainers, including Sean Paul and David Letterman.
On the other hand, FIFA has gone to great lengths to keep political messages out of its tournament in Qatar. According to CNN, Qatar’s attitude towards LGBTQ people and migrant workers has been in the headlines for weeks after the start of the World Cup. To this, FIFA chief Gianni Infantino gave an explosively scathing reply accusing Europe and the West of hypocrisy.
FIFA also banned players from wearing rainbow-themed anti-discrimination armbands and prohibited fans from showing flags other than those of teams playing and other political messages. However, World Cup organizers have made an exception for the Palestinian flag, which is mainly displayed during the Games.
Let us tell you that after the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian team was banned from the tournament. The Russian military has been attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a missile barrage in recent weeks, so that Ukrainians face severe cold during the winter. Argentina and France will face each other in the final match of the World Cup to be held at the Lusail Stadium in Doha with a capacity of 80,000 spectators.
