Decreasing fertile land also creates tension between farmers and herders
Abuja, At least 23 people have been killed in a bloody clash between herders and farmers in the Nigerian state of Benue. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, there was a situation of conflict between farmers and herders over land resources, which is now becoming a common thing in this African country. The president of Benyu’s Ukum Local Government Area, Kertyo Tunbur, expressed grief over the incident, reporting the death of 23 people. Benue is one of the central belt states of Nigeria, where the majority Muslim population lives close to the Christian population.
The struggle started with the death of two shepherds
Local resident William Samson said the trouble started on Tuesday when villagers killed two shepherds and stole their cattle. After this, the shepherds retaliated in Gabezi village on Wednesday. A total of 23 people lost their lives in the violent clash that followed. Competition over land use is particularly complex in the country’s Benue because the lines between farmers and herders often line up with ethnic and religious divisions.
Climate change is also a reason
With climate change in Africa facing more water and farming woes than ever before, shepherds are forced to bring their cattle to farmers’ lands. Due to the already scarce resources in the country, this issue often creates a situation of conflict between the shepherds and the farmers. The rapidly increasing population and decreasing fertile land in the country are also making this crisis more serious.
