Herman Suhrman, a government official in the city of Cianjur in West Java, where the quake was epicenter, told news channel Metro TV that 44 people had died and more than 300 were injured.

The 5.6-magnitude quake was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in the Cianjur region of West Java province, the Geological Survey said, according to news agency AP. Witnesses told news agency Reuters that some people evacuated offices in Jakarta’s central business district while others felt buildings shaking and saw furniture moving.
