COVID-19 XBB.1.5: WHO alert regarding new variant of Corona – People traveling to these countries must wear masks

London. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the rapid spread of Omicron’s sub-variant XBB.1.5 in many countries of the world including the US. WHO officials also said that given the rapid spread of the new subvariant of Omicron, all countries should consider recommending that passengers on long-haul flights wear masks.
WHO/Europe officials said in a press briefing on Tuesday, ‘The number of infected XBB.1.5 subvariants in Europe is still low, but it is increasing rapidly. The WHO’s senior emergency officer for Europe, Catherine Smallwood, said travelers should be advised to wear masks in high-risk situations such as long-haul flights. Along with this, he said that ‘this recommendation should be issued for passengers coming from a country where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly’.

Health officials have reported that XBB.1.5 is the most rapidly spreading omicron subvariant detected so far. 27.6% of the new corona infected patients in America are victims of this subvariant.

Although it is not yet clear whether XBB.1.5 will cause a new wave of corona in the world or not. Experts say that existing vaccines protect against severe symptoms, hospitalization and death.
XBB.1.5 is another descendant of Omicron, which is the most infectious and effective virus spreading corona worldwide. It is a variant of the XBB subvariant, which was first discovered in October.
