His mother did not want to leave him, but Mazuryk had a son in the Ukrainian army and was worried that the Russians would kill him. He said that even though the occupation troops confiscated people’s phones, Mazuric managed to speak to his mother and other relatives almost daily because he used to call secretly.

According to local officials, more than half a million people have fled the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions since February. Although the exact number is difficult to calculate.
