Ottawa: The Consulate General of India in Toronto on Tuesday (local time) condemned the defacement of the Ram temple in Mississauga with anti-India graffiti. The Indian Embassy requested the Canadian authorities to investigate the incident and take prompt action against the perpetrators. The Consulate General of India gave information in this regard by tweeting. This is not the first time that a Hindu temple in Canada has been defaced with anti-India slogans and pictures. Earlier, in January, anti-India paintings were painted on a Hindu temple in Brampton, which sparked outrage in the Indian community.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto had condemned the vandalism in the Gauri Shankar Temple, saying that this act hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. The consulate office said in a statement, ‘We strongly condemn the defacement of the Gauri Shankar Temple, a symbol of Indian heritage in Brampton, with anti-India graffiti. We have expressed our concern on this matter with the Canadian authorities. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown also condemned the vandalism and said Canadian authorities were investigating the incident. Patrick had tweeted, ‘This disgusting and shameful act has no place in our city or country. I have raised my concerns over this heinous crime with Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiyappa.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said, ‘Everyone deserves to feel safe in their place of worship.’ Earlier in September 2022, the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Canada was defaced with anti-India graffiti by ‘Canadian Khalistani extremists’. Then Indian-origin Canadian Member of Parliament Chandra Arya tweeted, ‘The vandalism of the Toronto BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Temple by Canadian Khalistani extremists should be condemned by all. This is not just an isolated incident. Hindu temples in Canada have been targeted by such hate crimes in recent times. Canadian Hindus are legitimately concerned. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized in July 2022 at the Vishnu Temple in Richmond Hill, Greater Toronto Area. In both cases, pro-Khalistan slogans were painted on the temple and vandalism was promoted on social media by pro-Pakistan handles.
