Jakarta, After the death of 69 children in the African country of Gambia after consuming a cough syrup from India, Indonesia has now banned the sale of all cough syrup medicines. According to Indonesia, substances have been found in some syrups that are responsible for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Due to these elements, now 99 young children have died in Indonesia this year. However, it is not yet clear whether the drug was imported or produced locally.
200 cases of AKI reported in Indonesia
Indonesian health officials said on Thursday that they had recorded nearly 200 cases of AKI in children, most of whom were under the age of five. The alert is also significant because earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert on four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of 69 children in The Gambia. According to Indonesia’s health minister, the same chemical compound has also been found in some medicines used locally.
Haryana government stopped the production of the factory
On this issue, it has been said from India that the importing country usually checks the medicine before sending it to the market. Here, the Haryana Drug Controller and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization together have started investigating the matter. He found in the investigation that Maiden Pharma did not take some necessary steps while making the medicine. Also, used such things, whose expiry date had passed.
The Haryana government has stopped production at the company’s Sonepat factory. The Indian government has asked the World Health Organization to send documents that can establish that these deaths are related to the syrup. A four-member committee has also been constituted to review these documents.
