Jakarta: Rescuers and firefighters continued to search and rescue operations on Saturday following a massive fire at a fuel storage depot in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, but 16 people were still missing. At least 15 people have died due to fire in the depot. Pertamina’s Plumpang Fuel Storage, a fuel storage depot operated by state oil and gas company Pertamina, is located near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah area of North Jakarta. It supplies 25 percent of Indonesia’s fuel needs.

Fire officials said that at least 260 firefighters and 52 fire tenders are engaged in extinguishing the fire in the surrounding area. Eko Kristiawan, manager of the Java region of Pertamina, said that preliminary investigation revealed that the fire broke out due to the rupture of the pipeline, possibly due to lightning in heavy rain. People living near the depot told that they could smell a strong smell of gasoline, due to which some people also vomited and a fierce explosion took place at around eight o’clock in the night.
