11 people killed in attack on a camp in Mali, Islamic extremists suspected

Bamako (Mali). At least 11 people were killed in an attack on a camp in Mali’s Gao region. Officials gave this information on Thursday. Officials said it is suspected that Islamic extremists carried out the attack. Sadou Diallo, former mayor of Gao, said the attackers destroyed food stored inside the camp and stole all the livestock. The United Nations confirmed the attack on Monday through a statement.

However, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. But the attacks have been identified by terrorists linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara group, who target civilians in the Gao and Menaka regions. The attack near Gao comes amid growing fears about extremist violence in Mali following the departure of French troops earlier this year after nine years helping fight militants in the West African country.

The French army left amid deteriorating relations with Colonel Assimi Goita, who seized power in Mali nearly two years ago. In October, at least six people were killed in an explosion after a passenger bus was hit by a roadside bomb in the village of Songo in Mali. Local official Bakiro Tal had told that the explosion took place on Thursday in Songo village, about 12 km from Bandiagara in central Mali.

“Several other people who were seriously injured in the explosion have been taken to the hospital in Mopti area and we have no information about their condition at the moment,” Tal said, adding that no one has claimed responsibility. Although extremist groups linked to al-Qaeda have been identified, they plant explosives on roads to target Malian army vehicles and UN peacekeepers.
